Deep Tissue Massage

Swedish massage concentrates on the superficial muscles just under the skin. Deep tissue massage concentrates on the deeper muscles and connective tissues. Stretching of fascia (the connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, bones and organs) releases chronic muscle contracture and adhesions. This allows for positive changes in posture and creates freedom of movement. Effleurage is used as a warm-up in deep tissue massage. Petrissage and kneading techniques are used along with more direct techniques to address scar tissue, spasms and adhesions in the soft tissue.

To create a deeper pressure, the therapist contracts their core muscles and uses the larger muscles on their legs to act as the ‘power house’ to drive the hands, fingers, thumbs, forearms and elbows as they work on your body. During a Swedish massage the power is less and can come from hands, arms and shoulders.

A note from the therapist
I prefer a therapist who will not chat if I want to switch off, who tucks your feet in to keep you warm, has the music at the right volume, and their hands warmed for your treatment. It’s all about the small things and that is what I pay attention to. I also do not book clients ‘back-to-back’ so you receive the full time you have paid for. All these little extra touches go towards giving you the best possible experience. You can enjoy a Deep Tissue Massage as an all over body treatment, or on specific, problematic areas of your body.

Questions?

Additional information for the Deep Tissue massage is available below. If you cannot find the information you want below please feel free to contact us and we will happily answer your questions.

New & nervous?

At our initial consultation I hope to make you feel comfortable and at ease. During the treatment you will remain covered up, all but the body part I am working on. I will always make sure you are warm and comfortable throughout. This includes use of a heated blanket and leaving the room while you get dressed and undressed. Please feel free to call for an informal chat.

What do I wear?

During the massage you be in your underwear. It is best not to wear a bra (girls) but if you would prefer to keep it on you may. You will be covered up the entire time, with just the body part being worked on exposed.

Do I need to do anything before my appointment?

There are no special requirements.

Is there any reason why I can't have a Deep Tissue massage?

If you are in the first trimester of pregnancy you cannot have a Swedish massage. A full consultation will be carried out before the massage. Some serious illnesses may require a doctor’s note of approval before your first massage.

Is there any aftercare advice to follow?

Drink water, avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol. Try not to engage in strenuous activity.
